Overview

Shell Scotford is pleased to be an operator in the Fort Saskatchewan region for more than 25 years. Shell Scotford is comprised of three sites - the chemicals plant, refinery and upgrader.  The refinery manufactures a suite of products that includes gasoline, low sulphur diesel, jet fuel and others; the chemicals plant produces styrene monomer (used to manufacture plastics) and ethylene glycol (used for fleece for jackets).

The upgrader, a joint venture project with partners Chevron Canada and Marathon Oil Sands LP, started processing bitumen from Shell's Muskeg River Mine north of Fort McMurray in 2003 and currently has a design capacity of 155,000 bpd.  There are two pipelines coming into the upgrader: one brings heavy bitumen and diluent which are separated at the upgrader using a hydro conversion process, and the second returns the diluent back to Fort McMurray .

Shell is in the midst of expanding its upgrader by building a 100,000-barrel-per-day facility directly north of its base upgrader. The construction workforce on Shell's expansion peaked in 2009, and when completed in late 2010/early 2011 the new upgrader will add approximately 300 full-time Shell employees and 100 full-time contractors.
