Overview
As one of only two facilities in Western Canada capable of processing ethane-plus, Provident has 65,000 bpd of capacity to separate or fractionate natural gas liquids into components of ethane, propane, butane, and condensate. Ethane is a petrochemical feedstock used in the manufacture of ethylene. Propane is used in a number of applications, including residential heating and crop drying. Butane processed at the facility is primarily sold to refiners for blending into gasoline. Condensate is used as a diluent for heavy oil and bitumen produced by the oil sands. Provident’s Redwater fractionation facility boasts 12 pipeline receipt and delivery points; the largest rail rack in Western Canada; truck loading and unloading facilities; and 6 million barrels of salt cavern storage.
Williams fractionates olefins liquids into components of propylene, propane, butane/butylene and condensate. Propylene is a petrochemical feedstock used in the manufacture of polypropylene. The propylene made at this facility is a high purity polymer grade. Separating propane and propylene is a difficult task, because the boiling points are only 1 ½ degrees apart. Williams accomplishes this with their 320 foot, 213 tray, red and white splitter. The propylene splitter is the tallest fractionation tower in Canada. Provident contract operates the William’s facility.
Within the facility, TransCanada Energy owns a CoGen plant that produces power and heat for Provident and Williams processes. Surplus power is sold on the grid.
