Industry in the Region

Regional Growth and Industrial Development

Since 1954, over 40 companies have chosen to join other world-renowned corporations like Dow Chemical, Shell Canada, BP Canada, Agrium, Sherritt International, Praxair, and Air Liquide in locating to the Heartland.

The geographic region of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH) is 582 square kilometres (225 square miles) of industrial land. This includes 533 square kilometres (205 square miles) within the municipalities of the City of Fort Saskatchewan and the Counties of Lamont, Strathcona and Sturgeon, in addition to 49 square kilometres (20 square miles) in the municipality of the City of Edmonton (industrial area known as the Horsehills Energy and Technology Park).

The 23 member companies of NCIA directly employ approximately 4,500 people plus thousands of contract employees.  These companies spend approximately $700 million annually to purchase goods and services in the region, over and above the purchase of utilities and feedstock for their plants.

With industrial investments in manufacturing plants and infrastructure in the Heartland and capital region already exceeding $25 billion, and an additional $18 to 24 billion in investment expected in the next 10-25 years, there are several reasons why companies have chosen to locate in the Heartland making it Canada's largest chemical and petro-chemical processing centre.

Besides the business-friendly investment environment, the Heartland region has the most sought after natural resources including the second largest NGL storage in the world, the a very well educated and productive workforce in Canada, and a reliable source of feedstocks at competitive prices.
